Little Free Library is Open in Lower Saucon’s Polk Valley Park

The first Little Free Library (LFL) to be installed in a Lower Saucon Township park is ready to start lending and accepting books, the township announced last week.

Little Free Libraries are small kiosks that promote reading by giving everyone the opportunity to leave a book or take a book.

The new book-themed LFL was designed and built by township Parks & Recreation Board Member Tom Butera with materials donated by Spirk Brothers Inc., and won rave reviews from council members and others at a meeting at which it was displayed last month.

It has been mounted atop a pole near the Polk Valley Park pavilion, adjacent to the upper parking lot.

Parks & Recreation board member Atom Kallen “initially proposed this program for the township” and “will be the steward of this LFL kiosk,” the township said in its October 2017 Community Events & Updates newsletter.

“The LFL has been stocked with an initial supply of books which cater to all age groups,” the newsletter post indicated. “Feel free to borrow a book to read while you visit the park, or to take home and enjoy over a longer period of time. When you are done reading it, simply return it, share it or perhaps place one or two others from your collection into the LFL that you are willing to donate to the program. All books which can be found in a traditional public library are welcome in the LFL.”

Anyone with a larger quantity of books they would like to donate should contact the township at info@lowersaucontownship.org. The Hellertown Area Library also accepts larger book donations.
