Authorities Highlight Kia, Hyundai Thefts

Local and county law enforcement officials have launched public awareness efforts to prevent the theft of two makes of vehicle they say are particularly vulnerable even when locked.

According to a news release that was recently shared by the Lehigh County District Attorney’s office, Kia and Hyundai vehicles manufactured between 2011 and 2022 have been targeted by car thieves because they lack an engine immobilization device.

A different news release shared recently on Crimewatch by the Lower Saucon Township Police Department noted a nationwide uptick in the theft of these cars that began a couple of years ago as a “TikTok challenge.”

An engine immobilizer is an electronic security device that prevents a vehicle’s engine from being started without the correct key or key fob.

“In 2023, Hyundai and Kia rolled out a free software fix designed to prevent easy hot-wiring and start attempts,” the release said. “Yet, many vehicles still haven’t been upgraded, leaving them vulnerable.”

Owners of Kia and Hyundai vehicles manufactured between 2011 and 2022 can have their cars checked at a dealership, where engine immobilizers are available for free installation on vehicles lacking them.

Steering wheel locks can also be used to prevent their theft. The Lehigh County District Attorney’s office’s Auto Theft and Insurance Fraud Task Force held a wheel lock giveaway Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the AAA East Central office on Downyflake Lane in Allentown to encourage their use by Hyundai and Kia owners.

Other ways you can avoid becoming a victim of car theft are:

  1. Always Lock Your Doors and Windows
Even if you’re stepping away for just a moment, make sure all doors and windows are securely locked.
  2. Remove Keys from the Vehicle
Never leave your keys in the ignition or inside the car, even when parked at home.
  3. Park in Well-Lit Areas
Choose parking spots that are visible and well-lit, preferably in busy areas with security cameras nearby.
  4. Don’t Leave Valuables in Plain Sight
Store valuables in the trunk or glove compartment to avoid tempting thieves.
  5. Install a Tracking System
GPS tracking devices can help recover your vehicle if it’s stolen.
  6. Be Cautious with Spare Keys
Don’t hide spare keys in or around your vehicle. Thieves know where to look.
  7. Close Garage Doors
If you have a garage, keep it closed and locked; especially if your vehicle is parked inside.
  8. Stay Alert in Public Places
Be aware of your surroundings when parking or returning to your vehicle.
  9. Register Your Vehicle
Keep your registration and insurance information up to date, and consider etching your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on windows.
