A host of young athletes from St. Michael the Archangel School in Upper Saucon Township took home gold, silver and bronze medals from the end-of-season Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) district championships Sunday at the Emmaus High School track.
Head coach Joann Ochse reports that the Saucon Valley boys tennis team is having a very successful season, finishing their regular season play with a record of 14 wins and just two losses. The team recently competed in the Colonial League Team Championships. Winning the gold medal at first singles was junior Tej Laliwala; the silver medalist at second singles was senior Joel Thompson; and sophomore Michael Andres was silver medalist at third singles. Saucon’s first doubles team of Zach Appel and Damian Dziadowicz also won silver, with second doubles team of John Seipp and Keegan Maykut placing fourth. Overall the boys placed second, behind Moravian Academy.
Tuesday is going to be one for the books. The Saucon Valley Girls Varsity Soccer team is set to take on Southern Lehigh at home at 4 p.m., and what a game it will be! The Southern Lehigh/Saucon Valley rivalry always adds extra excitement and, no matter the sport, is always a good competition to witness. This game is no exception–but there is more at stake. The winner of this game will clinch first place in the Colonial Division.
Fighting until the bitter end in the PIAA District XI semifinal, Saucon Valley dropped a close one to a peaking Northern Lehigh Bulldog team Saturday. It took overtime in the final bout of the match against the Panthers to solidify Northern Lehigh as the winner and eventual District XI champion. Rumors were circulating that the match was so incredibly tight that the sixth or seventh tiebreak criteria would be needed to determine the winner if the final bout would have been in Saucon’s favor. One wild rumor that spread was that it could have come down to the opposing coaching staffs squaring off against one another in a game of dodgeball to ultimately break the tie. It was not to be, though.
With the Colonial League Championship now in their rearview mirror, the Saucon Valley Wrestling team now shifts their focus to the Team AA District XI Tournament. Tonight at 7:30 p.m., #1 Saucon Valley will wrestle at Whitehall High School against the winner of #8 Palisades and #9 Panther Valley (6 p.m.). The Panthers will then compete Saturday at Freedom High School, looking for a top-2 finish to advance. The District XI Champion, which will be determined Saturday evening, will travel directly to Hershey and compete in the PIAA team tournament on Thursday, Feb. 5.
