As part of a Day of Service, some local Saucon Valley Girl Scouts received a lesson in giving back–as well as sewing–on Martin Luther King Day.
The girls–who are in sixth through twelfth grade (Cadettes through Ambassadors)–gathered with their leaders at Christ Lutheran Church of Lower Saucon to transform donated men’s long-sleeve dress shirts into dresses for children in need on the other side of the world.
Troop leader Natalie Faroun said the dresses will be distributed to girls in the third world by the international relief organization Samaritan’s Purse.
Most of the girls hadn’t sewn prior to the Day of Service, but the finished products showed no signs of their inexperience.
Faroun said it was a nice change for them, since the “older (girls) don’t get to do a lot of hands-on stuff.”
She explained that last year they performed a similar act of kindness, making superhero capes for children in shelters, or “Capes for Kids.”
On Jan. 15, younger Saucon Girl Scouts (Daisies through Juniors) also took part in a Day of Service by making table favors for Meals on Wheels recipients and writing letters men and women serving in the military.
