Hellertown Police: Beards on the Way for a Good Cause

Est. Read Time: 2 mins

Hellertown residents who are used to seeing most of their cops clean-shaven are in for a bit of a surprise this month.beard-529829_1280

That’s because the borough police department is participating in an increasingly popular men’s health movement called “No Shave November” which seeks to raise awareness about cancers that affect men in particular, as well as funding for cancer research.

“No-Shave November’s mission is to not only raise funds for cancer research and treatment, but to educate the population about preventative measures,” according to the organization’s website.

“There are no official rules when taking part in No-Shave November,” the website’s FAQ page states. “We encourage men and women to join the cause, whether you put down your razor or go around town posting flyers. Any and all participation helps the effort!”

Men who already have beards can shave them off and “start fresh” for No Shave November, because “turning heads is one of the best ways to (raise awareness).”

In addition to the awareness their new whiskers will no doubt generate, HPD officers are hoping to raise $1,500 this month for the cause, Chief Robert Shupp said.

As of Monday, six donors had already contributed a total of $175 toward that goal.

Anyone who wishes to support the cause is asked to visit the Hellertown Police Department’s “No Shave” webpage and donate what they can, and (if they wish) refrain from shaving until Dec. 1 to show solidarity with the police and their fundraising effort.
