The pleasant spring weather the Saucon Valley has been experiencing for days is about to take a turn for the worse, according to the National Weather Service, which has issued a High Wind Warning for Northampton County from midnight till noon Sunday.

According to a special weather statement, winds will increase “rapidly” to 25 to 35 mph with gusts of up to 60 mph after midnight, with temperatures falling to the low 30s.

“The highest gusts and greatest potential for damaging winds will be very early Sunday morning,” the statement said. “The winds are then expected to diminish quickly later Sunday afternoon and especially Sunday evening.”

Impacts from the high winds–which may be accompanied by snow showers resulting in reduced visibility–may include:

  • Downed power lines and trees
  • Possible damage to structures
  • Difficult driving conditions, particularly for high profile vehicles, and on bridges or elevated roadways

A high wind warning means a hazardous high wind event is expected, with sustained wind speeds of at least 40 mph or gusts of at least 58 mph.

The warning is also in effect for Lehigh County, Bucks County and eastern Montgomery County.

Garbage cans and other objects that could be tossed about by the wind should be secured.
