A messy storm that blew through Pennsylvania Tuesday night brought rain and rising temperatures to the Saucon Valley, but the ground was so cold from days of subfreezing temperatures that the rainfall quickly turned to ice, which apparently resulted in several accidents Wednesday morning and a two-hour delayed opening for Saucon Valley and other schools.
A section of Meadows Road was closed and traffic had to be detoured around the intersection of Meadows and Skibo roads in Lower Saucon Township after a large pickup truck apparently struck a utility pole with enough force that it ended up perpendicular to the ground/parallel to the pole.
Township police and other emergency personnel responded to the scene of that accident.
It was not immediately clear if the truck slid on ice before it crashed, if there were any injuries as a result of the wreck, or whether police would file charges.
Another accident was reported around the same time at the busy intersection of Rt. 412 (Hellertown Road) and Commerce Center Boulevard in Bethlehem, where a truck carrying a load of dirt overturned and resulted in traffic delays.
All across Saucon Valley, Saucon Source readers reported slippery sidewalks, driveways and streets that by mid-day were finally beginning to thaw.
With high temperatures in the 50s forecast for Thursday, the brief icy spell will be but a memory until the next round of winter precipitation arrives, which forecasters say could be on Saturday.
