A 41-year-old Lower Saucon Township surgeon who was in the news last summer when his family’s campsite near Knoebels in Elysburg, Northumberland County was crushed by a large tree is charged in connection with a series of prescription fraud investigations that were announced by Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro and Lehigh County District Attorney Jim Martin Friday, according to Lehigh Valley Live.
Scott Keeney, D.O., of the 2000 block of Pheasant Court, is accused of taking the powerful prescription opioid painkiller Fentanyl from a patient’s room at St. Luke’s University Hospital in January and then injecting himself with the drug.
St. Luke’s said Keeney is no longer employed at the Fountain Hill hospital, but the circumstances of his departure weren’t disclosed, according to the article, which cites spokesperson Steve Andrews.
According to online court records Keeney is charged with felony Obtaining a Controlled Substance by Fraud or Misrepresentation, which is defined under Pennsylvania law as “the acquisition or obtaining of possession of a controlled substance by misrepresentation, fraud, forgery, deception or subterfuge.”
He is also charged with misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance, according to court records.
Keeney’s case status is listed as “inactive” and as of March 22 he was awaiting a preliminary hearing on the charges, the records state.
