Anastasia (Mushala) Popichak, 99, of the Moravian King’s Daughters Home, Bethlehem, and formerly of Yorkville, Manhattan, New York City, died peacefully Wednesday, June 7, 2017, with her immediate family by her side. She was the wife of the late Peter Popichak, who died Aug. 22, 2009 and to whom she was married for 68 years. She was born in New York City on July 3, 1917, the first child of Paul and Justina (Szwienkowska) Mushala. For most of her life and until 2015 she lived on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. She worked for many years as an executive secretary to Mr. Jerry Berns, an owner of the famous 21 Club, retiring from full-time employment in the early 1980s. She and her husband enjoyed traveling the world, and over the years took many trips to Europe, the Caribbean, Mexico and Florida, where they often vacationed in Sanibel Island and owned a second home in Delray Beach from 1977 to 1984. She loved the beach, hot weather, seafood (especially crabs), the beauty parlor, parties, dancing, opera, telling stories and most of all her family and her church, where she had many friends. She was a faithful member of St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral in New York City, where she sang in the choir and volunteered for many years. She attended Central Moravian Church after relocating to assisted living in Bethlehem. She will be dearly missed by her loving family, friends and all who knew her. Her family wishes to extend special thanks to the staff at Moravian King’s Daughters Home, for their compassionate care for Anastasia, who was also known to many as “Baba,” “Nasta” and “Ann” or “Anna.”
