A project years in the making–major renovations to Steel City Park in the Steel City section of Lower Saucon Township–is essentially wrapped up, as a ribbon-cutting held by the township to formally open the facility Wednesday demonstrated.
The several-acre park now includes a baseball field, a new playground, a new pavilion with eight picnic tables, a paved parking area, fencing, a water fountain and walking paths. Plantings including trees will be added in the future.
Councilwoman Donna Louder, who lives in the neighborhood, said she hopes to organize a community event to celebrate the opening of the park in the spring.
All of the work was completed by the township’s public works department.
Present for the brief ribbon-cutting ceremony were council members Louder, Priscilla deLeon (also a Steel City resident) and council president Ron Horiszny, as well as township manager Leslie Huhn, township engineer Judy Stern-Goldstein, Parks & Recreation Board chairman David Spirk and board member Atom Kallen.
Steel City Park is located at Riverside Drive and Mathews Avenue, across the street from the Steel City Volunteer Fire Company. The park along with all other locations in Steel City has a Bethlehem address (2122 Riverside Drive, Bethlehem, Pa.).
Beginning next year the pavilion will be available for rental from the township. For more information about the reservation system and fees, visit the township website.
