Black smoke billows from a car fire burning along I-78 west between the Easton and Rt. 33 exits Saturday afternoon.

A car fire and the emergency response to it slowed westbound traffic on I-78 near the Rt. 33 interchange Saturday afternoon, while a loose metal expansion plate in the roadbed of an overpass a bit further west caused the roadway to be restricted to one lane and slowed traffic in Lower Saucon Township between the Rt. 33 and Rt. 412 exits.

The metal joint is over Easton Road and “is all bent and buckled up a foot or so,” an eyewitness reported. It is unclear what caused it to buckle, but PennDOT has responded to assess the damaged infrastructure.

Likewise it is unknown what caused the car–a black sedan–to burst into flames.

The fire was extinguished by local firefighters, but it was unclear whether there were any injuries as a result of it.

Motorists traveling west on I-78 into Pennsylvania should expect delays and consider using alternate routes.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze which left the vehicle heavily damaged.
