Here’s a rundown of all the action that occurred on Aug. 25, which was opening day of the 2018 fall season for the Saucon Valley Youth Sports Association’s youth football and cheerleading teams at Dimmick Park in Hellertown.
Rookie Flag Division
The youngest flag team played a scrimmage against each other that saw some standout performances by #9 (3 TDs), #19 (2 TDs and some very good open field moves) and defensive standout #32, with 3 solo flag pulls/tackles. Coach Jason says they are coming along nicely, and that they are excited to play their game next week.
Competitive Flag Division
This team also played an intra-squad scrimmage and #3 (2 TDs) wasted no time showing his speed and playmaking abilities. Both defenses played very well and only allowed a total of three scores. Coach Greg says that everyone got good work in, that the defense looked good and that they will be ready for their next game against Pen Argyl. I personally look forward to seeing them all playing together against another opponent.
100 Pound Division
This group played a very strong game on both sides of the ball besting the visiting Notre Dame squad 26-12. The offense scored 4 TDs (3 rushing scored by #23, #21 and #27, and #2 passing to #10 for the aerial score). The defense forced several punts and recovered a fumble on a PAT to help seal the outcome. Coach Greg Trexler said the team played well, has gotten better and has done a great job of quickly learning new plays on both offense and defense.
120 Pound Division aka The Show
This was a dominating effort in all phases of the game resulting in a 26-0 final score. The offense scored 4 touchdowns, 3 of which came in the first half by #34 who seemed to be on a mission. #1 also chipped in a second half rushing TD. The defense played stout all day, locking down the Notre Dame visitors leading the way with two sacks, one each by #41 and #88 en route to the shutout.
Coach Brown stated after the game that the offensive line (Fitzpatrick, Griffith, Zaharakis, Peterson and Weiss) played especially well as a group, opening up the running lanes, and that all the kids played hard. Coach Erik Schneider congratulated the defense on a well-played game.
