Patriotism is alive and well in the Saucon Valley. With Memorial Day observances around the corner, the graves of U.S. veterans in Hellertown Union Cemetery have been decorated with new American flags.

Volunteers visited the cemetery Saturday to place the flags on the graves of many men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

The volunteers included members of Hellertown’s Edward H. Ackerman American Legion Post 397, members of the Legion baseball teams, Boy scouts and Girl scouts.

The Legion will hold its annual Memorial Day service at the cemetery bandstand on Sunday, May 26 at 2 p.m. Members of the public are invited to attend the service, which will feature patriotic musical performances, an Honor Guard, a Rifle Guard, the laying of wreaths on the Armed Services memorial and remarks by local elected officials and others.

Buried in the cemetery are veterans who served in the Civil War and all of the wars that have been fought by the United States since then, as well as many men and women who served our nation during peacetime.

Union Cemetery is located at 85 Main St., Hellertown, and is the final resting place for approximately 13,000 individuals who have been buried there since the cemetery was chartered in 1874.
