Panther Play of the Week: Mahaffey, The Best Option

The Saucon Valley Panthers couldn’t have asked for a better opponent with whom to end their two-game losing streak.  After falling to both Wilson and Northwestern Lehigh the previous two weeks, Saucon returned home on their Senior Night to play Colonial League East leader, the Notre Dame Crusaders.  The Panthers needed to bring their “A-game” in this contest and that they did.  It wasn’t a perfect night, but Saucon Valley, perhaps, played their best game of the season.

Having 367 total yards and twenty-five first downs, Saucon had no shortage of fantastic plays.  But, this well-executed “midline option” stands out as a really cool play.

With a 7-0 first quarter lead and facing a 3rd & 5 from the Crusader 39-yardline, Saucon Valley dialed up a midline option play to take advantage of the aggressive Notre Dame four-man front.  The Panthers do not block defensive tackle, Shakur Harris, and let him make the decision to tackle fullback Tyler Pfizenmayer or not.  Harris, by the way, at 6’2″, 220 is a stud who was credited with 21 tackles against the Panthers.  Anyway, Harris bites on the fullback fake cueing quarterback Dante Mahaffey to keep.  Mahaffey then follows tailback Braydyn Lugardo through the line a hole wider.

Watch as Mahaffey fools the Crusader defense on “midline-option” and runs untouched into the end zone to extend the Panther lead to 14-0!

Up Next: Saucon Valley (6-3) will travel to Palisades (2-7) on Friday for their regular season finale. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Good luck Panthers, the Source is with you!
