Saucon Valley Runner Who Made History Honored for Achievement
A remarkable student-athlete who recently made not only school–but also state–history was recognized for her achievement in a ceremony at Saucon Valley High School last week.
Senior runner Virginia Kraus became the first athlete ever to win four Colonial League titles, four District XI titles and four PIAA State championships in cross country with her fourth consecutive win at the PIAA Cross Country State Championships in Hershey late last month, where she crossed the finish line in 17:48.
Kraus has also been recognized as the 2024–2025 Gatorade Pennsylvania Girls Cross Country Player of the Year.

“We could not be prouder of Virginia,” said Saucon Valley Superintendent Jaime Vlasaty, following Kraus’s victory. “Her dedication, discipline and leadership set an extraordinary example for her teammates and our entire school community.”

Saucon Valley Director of Athletics Ryan Johnston said Kraus and her teammates are the quiet, often unassuming “heroes” who run in all kinds of weather to be able to compete and win.
“They’re running on purpose, which is something I still can’t figure out,” he quipped.
“We’re super proud as a school,” Johnston said.
Saucon Valley High School Principal Dr. Richard Kaskey said Kraus is not only a “great athlete,” but also a “great student” and a role model for her peers.
“I feel that you’re going to make a lot of contributions to this world,” he told her.
Head cross country coach Mike Vidumsky had similarly high praise for the petite runner he called “a machine.”
“She rallies the team together,” he noted. “She’s like having a third coach on staff in a lot of ways.”
Describing her personality, Vidumsky said Kraus is “not only…humble, but also very outgoing,” and has been able to inspire a many of the younger, up-and-coming long distance runners on the Panther team, who see her as a kind of celebrity.
Vidumsky added that he feels fortunate “to coach such a wonderful group of athletes.”
“I would not have been able to do this without all of you,” Kraus said at the conclusion of the Nov. 5 ceremony. “Thank you for this recognition. It means a lot.”
