The Southern Lehigh Public Library Board of Directors voted recently to accept a $50,000 donation from Lower Saucon Township, library officials said Wednesday.
If you are interested in helping to preserve Upper Saucon Township history, township officials would like to hear from you. Last month, in an announcement posted on the township’s website, they indicated that volunteers are being sought to help found an Upper Saucon Township Historical Society.
Former Hellertown Area Library board member Lara Goudsouzian, Ph.D., writes that she is “deeply disappointed in my local government” and that she supports “the actions of the Hellertown Area Library Board in removing Lower Saucon Township residents, myself included, from the board.”
After remaining silent for weeks, the members of the Southern Lehigh Public Library Board of Directors issued a statement Tuesday regarding the ongoing kerfuffle involving Lower Saucon Township and the Hellertown Area Library into which they’ve been drawn.
Lower Saucon resident Victoria Opthof-Cordaro says the Hellertown Area Library trustees’ recent decision to amend the library’s bylaws and remove township representatives from the board was not only appropriate given the lack of an agreement with the township, but also in keeping with township council’s past “critical stance on library appointees participating in HAL board meetings beyond their term.”
In spite of Lower Saucon Township Council’s decision last month to reject a new agreement with the Hellertown Area Library, there is still hope for the issues related to that decision to be resolved, according to a letter from township officials to residents.

The Hellertown Area Library announced that there will be two vacancies on the library’s Board of Trustees effective Dec. 31. One must be a resident of either Hellertown Borough or Lower Saucon Township to apply.
