A fitness center in the Saucon Square shopping center complex on Rt. 378 in Lower Saucon Township is planning a “soft opening” around Dec. 1, a company official said Monday.
Connecticut-based Maxx Fitness will occupy 30,000 square feet carved from the space formerly occupied by a Pathmark that closed in 2011. It will be located next to a Dollar Tree store that opened earlier this year that was also carved out of the space the supermarket occupied.
The company’s director of operations, Brian Cannone, said the new gym in Lower Saucon will offer a number of amenities that others in the area don’t necessarily provide, especially at a comparable price point. Those amenities will include a cross-fit room, a spinning room and a group exercise room.
“I’ve never seen a room this big just for group-ex,” he said during a tour of the facilities.
The club will also have an on-site juice/protein bar next to the front entrance, tanning booths, a supervised “Kids’ Club” room and a “theater room” where exercise buffs will be able to work out on their favorite machine while watching a featured movie of the day.
The nearly-finished locker rooms and bathrooms at the gym feature tiled floors, black granite countertops and deep shower stalls with floor-to-ceiling tile.
On the main floor of the gym, near the front windows, 75 pieces of cardio equipment will have center stage, and in an adjacent front room a wooden “slam wall” will allow members to take out their aggression with medicine balls.
Cannone said the Lower Saucon Township Maxx Fitness will employ approximately 20 to 25 people.
Its hours will be 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Thursday; 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday; and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. The Kids’ Club will be open from 9 a.m. to noon, and 5 to 9 p.m., weekdays.
The gym offers two membership levels. For $10 per month (plus enrollment fee), individuals receive a basic membership that allows them access to the primary amenities at the Lower Saucon gym only, as well as an initial meeting with a personal trainer.
For $19.99 per month (plus enrollment fee), someone who signs up receives access to all of the onsite amenities (including tanning), as well as access to the other Maxx Fitness locations in the area. Those gyms are located on Easton Avenue in Bethlehem Township and S. Fourth Street in Allentown.
At both membership levels a new member will receive a t-shirt and a “visual fitness plan,” which Cannone said is something unique to Maxx Fitness.
The visual fitness plan is a motivational tool designed to help assess each new member’s goals and help them achieve them.
In addition to its Lehigh Valley gyms, Maxx Fitness has two locations in Rhode Island, in Providence and Lincoln.
All of the locations are currently company-owned, but franchises may be available in the future, Cannone said.
Pre-registration for the Lower Saucon gym is now open, both online and in-store.
