Alleged $400,000 Theft from Fire Company a Shocking Betrayal: Letter to the Editor

Hellertown resident Ron Shegda says the alleged theft of nearly $400,000 from Dewey Fire Company is a sign of moral devolution, both locally and nationally.

To the Editor:
I just sent a check to support Dewey and feel immeasurably betrayed.
Our nation and town have signs of devolution. The story here is that money was allegedly stolen to support a gambling habit, where I vociferously opposed the plan for a casino in our midst. Hellertonians at the time rejected my plea at the polls.
We reap what we sow! (Galatians 6:7-10) We need greatness, not grand theft!

  • Very convenient Ron. I fail to recall your vociferously opposing the casino while you and I were on the Planning Commission. Your “Plea at the Polls” was rejected? I don’t recall that plea either! Personally speaking, I believe that the Sands Casino has led a long needed revitalization of the South Side along with providing a sizeable amount of money to the state and many local governments. Again, on a personal basis, I would prefer luxury-type taxes to those from my own pocket. Absolutely, some people can get out of control and that can, and does, cause problems. Anyone from our area, who wishes to gamble can easily do so without doing it in our state, but when they patronize our casinos we get a part of that action. If they were to go to New Jersey or elsewhere, then we get absolutely nothing. As an active member of the Dewey Fire Company, I share your disgust with this situation, but I will not place the blame on a very good community partner, the Sands. It’s a sad situation and I just hope that the community stands behind the Dewey Fire Company for the important work that we do in and for our service area, our community. There was a bad apple in the bunch and that is being dealt with to the best of our ability. To quote the company President, “service was never impacted”. Thankfully so.
