After 11 years as Head Coach of the Boys Soccer team at Saucon Valley High School, Mel Moyer III has decided to resign his coaching position in order to spend more time with his young family.
Since Moyer became the head coach of the team, they have become known as a formidable opponent in the Colonial League and District XI, with a total of 154 wins, 60 losses and 11 ties. This record makes Moyer the most successful boys coach in Saucon’s history.
During Moyer’s tenure the competitive Panthers earned appearances in the Colonial League Playoffs in 2008, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016, winning the Colonial League Championship in 2008 and 2009, and winning Colonial League South Division championships in 2009, 2012 and 2013. The Panthers made District XI playoff appearances all 11 years he coached, ending up District finalists in 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2012. They brought home a District Championship title in 2014 and made three PIAA state playoff appearances, in 2011, 2012 and 2014.
Moyer was honored with the title of Express-Times Coach of the Year as well as Morning Call’s Coach of the Year in 2008. He was selected in 2008 and 2009 to coach the Colonial League All-Star team against the Lehigh Valley Conference All-Star team in the Lions All-Star Classic game. The Colonial League team won both years.
During Moyer’s tenure, he coached three All-State players, numerous All-Area players, 21 League First team players, 13 League Second team players and 10 Honorable Mention players.
Moyer stated, “It has been a pleasure to serve the Saucon Valley School District as its varsity Boys Soccer coach. Over the course of my lengthy tenure, I have had the pleasure of working with many tremendous athletes and supportive parents. The Saucon Valley Soccer Club continuously provided the high school program with talented and coachable athletes. We always had quality and knowledgeable coaches at the high school level to work with the players, especially the staff at the end of my career. I am sure all of them will move on to be head coaches in the future.”
Though he’s stepping down from coaching high school soccer, Moyer will continue to teach English at the high school.
Moyer has established a strong foundation that will hopefully be able to be built upon for years to come.
Saucon’s Athletic Director Bob Frey stated in a press release, “We offer our thanks to Mel for his dedication and commitment to our Boys Soccer program and wish all the best to him and his family.”
Panther fans look forward to the continued success of the Boys Soccer team.
