Dr. Dean Woodward Seibel, 89, of Hellertown, formerly of Littleton, N.C., passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at the VNA Hospice House of St. Luke’s, Lower Saucon Township. He was born in Norwalk, Ohio on June 12, 1927 to the late Carl H. and Ruth (Sheldon) Seibel. Dean was a graduate of Norwalk High School; earned a BS in Mathematics and an Ohio Teaching Certificate from Denison University, Granville, Ohio; earned an MS in Mathematics and Education from Kent State University, Kent, Ohio; and earned a Doctor of Education degree from Harvard University. Dean served our country faithfully in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, and was honorably discharged as a Petty Officer Third Class. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service, Ringoes, N.J., and from Educational Testing Service (ETS), Princeton, N.J., where he was a research psychologist. He also was the Dean of Students from 1967-68 at Sante Fe Junior College, Gainesville, Fla., and was employed from 1967-68 at Educational Testing Service (ETS), Princeton, N.J., where he was head of the Test Norm Section, later served as Director of Field Studies and was involved in revising the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). He taught mathematics and coached basketball at Greenwich High School in Greenwich, Ohio, from 1950-51. He was responsible for numerous publications for ETS, the College Board Review and the National Research Council dealing with academic performance statistics and evaluation. Dean was a member of Beta Theta Pi; the U.S. Naval Reserves, from 1950-66 (retiring as Lieutenant Junior Grade); the United Presbyterian Church of USA, as an Elder; and the American Numismatic Association. The Seibel family would like to extend special thanks to Dean’s caregivers at Dedicated Nursing Associates, St. Luke’s University Hospital, Phoebe Ministries, the VNA Hospice House and to their brothers and sisters at Mountainview Moravian Church for their support.

Loving son: Geoffrey C. Seibel and his wife BethAnn (Transue) of Hellertown; granddaughters: Elizabeth M. Seibel of Plainsboro, N.J., and Catherine I. Seibel of Long Island City, N.Y. He was predeceased by children: Steven M. Seibel (2000) and Linda Seibel Hancock (2012); brother: Carl Sheldon Seibel (2012).
