A 16-year-old boy has been charged with attempted robbery (a first-degree felony) after Hellertown Police say he was apprehended as he allegedly approached a borough gas station/convenience store with “a realistic BB pistol” and other items that could have been used to help conceal his identity during a robbery.
In a news release issued Wednesday, police said the boy was spotted by an officer parking a bicycle behind Top Star Exxon, 1570 Main St., at 1:10 a.m. Tuesday.
As he approached the convenience store from Main Street, police said the officer stopped him and found him in possession of the pistol, a pair of reflective sunglasses, a second set of socks that could have been used as gloves and “a t-shirt around his neck positioned to where it could be used as a face/head cover.”
After being questioned, police said the teen allegedly “admitted to planning to steal merchandise from Topstar.”
He has also been charged as a juvenile with misdemeanor attempted theft, possession of instruments of crime, providing false identification to law enforcement and carrying an air rifle as a minor.
