If you like a clean community, your chance to help keep Hellertown clean is fast approaching.

Hellertown is Home is a new cleanup effort organized by a member of the community–Vincent Behe–that will take place on two consecutive Saturdays in early June: the 2nd and the 9th, from 9 a.m. to noon.

“The inspiration for the cleanup is simple,” Behe said in a news release Tuesday. “Myself and many others want to keep Hellertown a beautiful and welcoming place to live, and maintaining a clean community is a key step toward that goal. … Hellertown is our home, and we need to look after it for ourselves and for others. We have many beautiful facilities such as the Rail Trail, but it is also our responsibility to maintain those facilities so that they might be enjoyed by all.”

The first cleanup site, the Thomas Ironworks site, is west of the Saucon Rail Trail, north of Water Street Park.

The second cleanup site will be a stretch of land along Silver Creek near Main Street.

Litter is strewn among weeds near Silver Creek along Harris Street, which is the alley on the west side of Main Street in Hellertown.

For the Thomas Ironworks site cleanup on June 2, volunteers will assemble at the Water Street Park basketball court at 8:45 a.m. and continue to the site from there.

For the Silver Creek site cleanup June 9, volunteers will gather at Detwiller Plaza (Main Street and Easton Road) at 8:45 a.m. and continue to the site.

Volunteers are encouraged to follow the “buddy system” and always have someone with them wherever they go when participating. Volunteers should also come prepared for outdoor work, with sunglasses, long pants, sunscreen, bug spray and any other necessary supplies.

Participants do not need to make it for both weeks, or even for the full sessions. All help will be appreciated, and participants are welcome to clean up for as long as time permits. Supplies will be provided to all volunteers, as well as refreshments when the cleanup is concluded.
