Ancient Rock Outcrop Highlighted by New Rail Trail Sign

A sign that provides information about the geology of a rock outcrop has been installed on the Saucon Rail Trail just south of the Meadows Road crossing in Lower Saucon Township. The sign is located in front of a rock formation that displays excellent examples of fossilized stromatolites that date back 500 million years ago to the Cambrian Period. Students from Lehigh University’s Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, under the direction of Dr. Frank Pazzaglia, cleaned the dolostone rock outcrop to prepare it for display. For more information on the geological site, visit http://www.lehigh.edu/~fjp3/srt/srt_geology.html.
