The Saucon Valley Alumni Association recently announced the names of the first three recipients of its Wall of Fame award, which was conceived as a way to recognize the often-overlooked achievements and accomplishments of Saucon Valley alumni. Nominations for the first Wall of Fame award were sought in early 2015, and from those nominations the following recipients were chosen:

Grant Hoffert (Class of 1942)
Dr. Frank J. Rauscher Jr., Ph.D. (Class of 1949)
Harry Rinker (Class of 1959)

Hoffert is a former Hellertown Lions Club president and recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow Award–the Lions’ highest form of recognition for dedication to humanitarian service. He is an active member and vice president of the Hellertown Historical Society, where he’s helped spearhead the restoration of the Heller-Wagner Grist Mill, the preservation of the Pony Bridge and the construction of the society’s pole barn museum. He was also involved with the construction of the Hellertown Area Library and a pump house to improve water supply to Hellertown. He is a member of Dewey Fire Co. No.

On Saturday the Saucon Valley High School Soccer Alumni gathered in Hellertown for the tenth annual alumni showdown against the current high school teams.

In the morning Ladies game, 2010 graduate Lauren Fowler scored a goal for the alumni that kept the halftime deficit at 2-1. Seniors Paige Jones and Lauren Binn scored the first half goals for the students. However, much to the surprise of very few under the hot and humid weather conditions, fatigue seemed to set in for the “old-timers” and the students finished with a 6-1 victory. Even though the Alumni created a few solid chances in the second half, they were unable to find the back of the net. The students, however, were able to tally four second-half goals.

Do you have strong opinions about the Saucon Valley School District? If you do, you now have a golden opportunity to be heard. Late last week, the district launched an online “Parent and Community Survey” that superintendent Monica McHale-Small said in an email “will be used to help us to better understand the strengths and needs of the district.” “Many of the questions are derived from the district’s current strategic plan,” she added. Each question within the survey asks participants to strongly agree, agree, disagree or strongly disagree with a particular statement.
