Borough May Seek Grant for Pathway

The borough of Hellertown is planning to seek grant money to help pay for the possible expansion and extension of a path that parallels Friedensville Road and leads to Water Street Park, borough manager Cathy Hartranft said recently.

A macadam path along Friedensville Road in Bethlehem could be extended to Duh Drive if Hellertown borough secures a grant that would allow for its development.

An asphalt path along Friedensville Road in Bethlehem could be extended to Duh Drive if Hellertown borough secures a grant that would allow for its development.

According to Hartranft, the asphalt path that now leads to and past the Saucon View apartments would be extended a short distance to Duh Drive–a cul-de-sac along which the Lehigh University-owned Saucon Village Apartments are located.

Hartrafnt said plans for the new path aren’t finalized, but that it could include a “share the road” style bicycle lane in Friedensville Road.

Hundreds of people live in the apartment complexes along Friedensville Road, which is a major east-west artery in western Lower Saucon Township and Bethlehem.

When the Saucon Valley Farmers’ Market returns to its home base in the newly-renovated Water Street Park in the spring, it is expected to once again draw many of those residents as well as foot traffic from the Society Hill complex located across the street.
