In addition to being much colder, the second weekend of December could provide the Saucon Valley with its first real dose of winter weather, including accumulating snow, according to forecasts.

The National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for the Lehigh Valley and surrounding areas in which it states that “there is a potential for up to a couple of inches of accumulating snow, along with a chance of freezing rain Sunday night into Monday.”

As of Friday morning, the NWS forecast for Hellertown for Sunday calls for a 40 percent chance of snow after 1 p.m., with a high near 34.

Sunday night snow is likely before 1 a.m., with snow possibly mixed with freezing rain between 1 and 3 a.m., and snow mixed with rain possible after 3 a.m., according to the forecast.

On Monday snow could change to rain, with the high temperature forecast to be 43.

Eastern PA Weather Authority is also predicting what could be the area’s first significant snow of the season.

“We’ll have to watch for another system approaching from the west, which could provide a few snow showers later in the day (Sunday), but then a more concentrated period of snow…in the overnight period, possibly changing to a mixed bag late at night or early Monday morning, and then rain at some point Monday AM before ending,” meterologist Bobby Martrich said in his Daily Forecast Discussion Friday. “There is the potential for several inches of snow/sleet prior to any changeover for some areas, and (we) will monitor this system closely.”
