Mother Nature delivered an early Christmas present to snow-lovers in Saucon Valley Saturday, as several inches of the white stuff accumulated, especially on grassy and untreated surfaces.
Altough the National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory through 1 a.m. Saturday, the snow–which was generally light–wasn’t enough to keep most people home.
It was just the right amount to create a festive atmosphere as the height of the holiday season approaches, and many cars with baled Christmas trees on their roofs could be seen up and down Main Street throughout the day.
The advisory issued late Saturday afternoon calls for an accumulation of 1 to 3 inches of snow, on top of what has already fallen.
“Plan on slippery road conditions, especially untreated surfaces and bridges and overpasses,” as well as reduced visibility, it stated.
It has been several years since the area experienced an accumulating snow this early in the season.
Christmas trees at Arnold’s Market on Friedensville Road in Lower Saucon Township were quickly coated by the powdery snow that fell throughout the day Saturday.
The main roads in Hellertown borough remained mostly clear and were generally just wet throughout much of the day, thanks to the efforts of local public works departments.
Snow gradually began to accumulate on sidewalks in Hellertown during the afternoon.
In spite of the inclement weather Saturday the Saucon Rail Trail in Hellertown wasn’t completely deserted.
The festively decorated Heller-Wagner Grist Mill on Walnut Street in Hellertown looked picture postcard-perfect with a light dusting of snow on it. The mill is maintained by the Hellertown Historical Society.
Hellertown’s iconic Detwiller Plaza looked pretty with a coating of fresh white snow on it.
Dimmick Park in Hellertown was truly a winter wonderland with several inches of unblemished snow on the ground.
Miniature icicles looked decorative on Cafe Erica’s awning in the 600 block of Main Street in Hellertown Saturday.
Hellertown’s venerable culinary landmark, Crossroads Hotel, beckoned the cold and hungry with the promise of a hot meal and perhaps a cold beer on Saturday.
