To commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, St. Luke’s Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery is hosting its third annual BRA Day, “The Girls” Night Out.
“The Girls” Night Out is one of many BRA (Breast Reconstruction Awareness) events being held this month throughout the country; all of them are focused on providing a fun evening for breast cancer survivors, while educating them about their options following a mastectomy and/or lumpectomy.
St. Luke’s “The Girls” Night Out event will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10 at the Homewood Suites in Center Valley (across from the Promenade Shops at Saucon Valley).
Proceeds will support the St. Luke’s Breast Cancer Compassion Fund, established to provide charitable support for programs and services that help St. Luke’s patients throughout their cancer journeys.
“There is a great deal of awareness about breast cancer itself, especially during the month of October when everyone is wearing pink, but not everyone is aware of the role that breast reconstruction plays in the healing process, both mentally and physically,” said Crystal Corredera, practice administrator at St. Luke’s Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. “We help give back what cancer took away, and our team is here for our patients through every step of the reconstruction process.”
“Another way we support patients is by helping alleviate some of the financial burden that can happen as patients go through treatment and surgery,” Corredera said. “The money we raise helps pay for things like medication, medical supplies, transportation, groceries or other necessities such as a wig or new clothes–anything patients need as they go through the process of healing.”
This year’s “The Girls” Night Out will have a carnival theme complete with games, door prizes, a DJ, dancing, face painting, photo booth, hors d’oeuvres, cocktails (even a special pink drink of the night!), silent auction items and much more. Vendor and information tables will also be set up to help educate patients about breast reconstruction. There will also be local businesses offering hair extensions, massages and more.
“This event is a way for breast cancer survivors, families and friends to celebrate life and look forward to the future because there is indeed a way back to that normalcy they crave after treatment,” says JC Martinez, MD. “Understanding their options, including breast reconstruction, can be very comforting to women faced with a breast cancer diagnosis. Through this event, we hope to raise awareness, peace of mind and hope.”
