Lower Saucon Township Police issued a warning to pet owners who live in the area of Quail Court Monday, after a fisher or “fisher cat”–a type of animal that is a member of the mustelid or weasel family–was reportedly spotted roaming by a resident of the area.

In a news release for an “animal complaint,” police said fisher cats are “known to be vicious towards other animals (mainly cats and dogs)” and that “residents should remain alert and avoid contact with these animals.”

“Try and keep a constant watch over family pets while they are outside to avoid an attack,” they added.

Quail Court is a residential street off Majestic Overlook Drive, near Hickory Hill Road in the western part of Lower Saucon Township.

According to the Wikipedia entry for the fisher, “there are anecdotal reports of fishers attacking pets and, in a 2009 case in Rhode Island, a 6-year-old boy. In 2014, a 12-year-old boy was attacked by what was believed to be a fisher in Massachusetts.”

Fishers are carnivorous and are native to the northern tier of the United States and Canada.
