On Monday, April 3 the students of St. Michael the Archangel School in Upper Saucon Township gathered in the Hanlon Center gymnasium to help the needy of Burkina Faso. Partnering with Catholic Relief Services, grades five through eight filed in to tables set up throughout the gym and, while dancing in place to music, filled 10,000 meals containing rice, vegetables and vitamin packets.

It took them less than one hour.

Overseeing the event were were faculty and staff, including a special visit from John Bakey, Chancellor of the Allentown Diocese.

The joint effort was spearheaded by Marianne Gano, Advancement Director at St. Michael. Said Gano, “I was researching the Catholic Relief Services and the various activities they do and this looked like it would be an educational experience for our students. As part of our mission statement, ‘we aspire to model young adults who embody the principles of morality and spirituality…’ This project offers an opportunity to do both by offering our time and efforts to feed the hungry.”

The school plans to make this a recurring event in addition to their current outreach programs, which include visiting Sacred Heart and making sandwiches for New Bethany Ministries.
