Lower Saucon Township officials are asking local residents to respect the fact that the Polk Valley Dog Park is temporarily closed due to conditions.

In a post on the park’s Facebook page Monday, the township said two people with two huskies were in the dog park Sunday.

Apparently, they climbed the fence as the gates were chained and there was a sign up saying the park was ‘CLOSED,'” the post said.

Last year a similar incident occurred. The park’s fence and gate were broken, and the township had to spend money to repair the damage.

Inclement weather is forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday, which means the already-saturated ground in the park will likely soften further and turn to mud if it is used by pets and their owners.

The township is asking anyone who sees someone in the dog park when it is closed to call the police department’s non-emergency number at 610-759-2200 and report it. A police officer will then be sent to investigate the report.

“It is difficult for us to make these decisions, but the dog park is closed for a reason, so please bear with us during this time,” the township said in its post. “The ground freezes in the evening hours and then unfreezes during the daytime. These conditions create a slushy, muddy and slippery dog park that will not be safe for your pet. Please do not ruin it for others who enjoy the dog park and take pride in it.”

Residents can visit other local dog-friendly parks while the Polk Valley Dog Park is closed, as well as the Saucon Rail Trail, which is open to leashed pets.
