More winter weather could be on the way to the Saucon Valley area.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for 10 a.m. Wednesday to 8 a.m. Thursday, when it says “heavy mixed precipitation” including 3 to 5 inches of snow and up to a tenth of an inch of ice are possible.
According to the watch statement, motorists in Northampton and Lehigh counties should “plan on slippery conditions” and “hazardous conditions (that) could impact the morning or evening commute.”
A winter storm watch means there is the potential for significant snow, sleet or ice accumulations that may impact travel.
In a first call forecast for the mid-week storm Monday, PA Weather Action lead forecaster Chris Corrigan also placed the Lehigh Valley in a zone where 3 to 5 inches of snow are possible.
“Visibility of a quarter to a half mile and snow-covered roadways will make travel dangerous in the late morning through Wednesday night,” he wrote.
Corrigan predicted that moderate to heavy snow will move into eastern Pennsylvania by 2 p.m., with the exception of northeastern Pennsylvania, where lesser amounts are forecast.
According to PA Weather Action, southern portions of the Lehigh Valley could see up to a tenth of an inch of ice, while northern parts could see a tenth to a quarter of an inch of ice on top of the snow.
Whatever frozen precipitation falls Wednesday is likely to melt Thursday, when high temperatures in the 50s are forecast.
Saucon Valley schools have four snow days built into their 2018-2019 school calendar. So far this winter four snow days have been used, so if the winter weather forces another school closure the district’s calendar could be affected.
