The identity of a truck driver who rear-ended a vehicle in slow-moving traffic on I-78 in Lower Saucon Township is unknown because police say he didn’t stop after the accident occurred.

In a news release Monday, Pennsylvania State Police at Belfast said the accident happened at mile marker 68.8 on I-78 westbound at approximately 1:45 p.m. May 4.

At the time there was a “backlog of traffic from another incident” that had shut down the interstate, state police investigator Jeremy Hayes said in a description of what happened.

As traffic began to move forward following the stoppage, the driver of the Freightliner struck the rear of a 2020 Toyota Corolla operated by a 61-year-old Allentown woman, his report said.

The woman pulled onto the right shoulder of the road, but the driver of the truck “never stopped,” continuing to travel west on I-78.

Police did not offer an additional descriptive details about the truck driver or his vehicle, but indicated that he would be cited for Following Too Closely if identified.

The Toyota sustained minor damage as a result of the accident, police said, and there were no injuries reported or observed to either the driver or her 60-year-old male passenger.
