Easton and Hellertown will receive over $6 million in state grants for development projects, state Rep. Robert Freeman (D-136) announced last week. In Easton, the funding will support projects by Stewart Silk Mill Redevelopment Co., Skyline Investment Group Easton LLC, Watermark Easton LLC and the Nurture Nature Center.
Another grant will help fund the construction of a new medical office building in Hellertown. PD Hellertown LLC will receive $1.25 million to develop the site on Main Street, near I-78, which was formerly occupied by the Champion spark plug factory. The factory, a former Superfund site, was demolished in the spring.
According to the news release, the grant money will help pay for the acquisition of the property, cover abatement and demolition costs, protect the existing environmental protective cap and implement necessary site improvements for the medical office building’s construction.
“(The grants) will lead to improved health care facilities, more outdoor recreational opportunities and additional housing and parking near the river,” Freeman said in a news release about the awards. “I was glad to help local and business officials work through the state grant process so they could acquire these needed funds for their projects.”
