Panthers Place Three On PIAA Podium

The Saucon Valley wrestling program was well-represented at the conclusion of the 2021 PIAA state wrestling championships.  And, all three powerful Panthers that placed in the tiring tournament are underclassmen, with an awesome opportunity to get back up on the Pennsylvania podium again next season.  Sophomore Jake Jones (172) along with juniors Ty Csencsits (189) and Dante Mahaffey (215) each ran the COVID era wrestling gauntlet to claim their respective medals in the 2021 PIAA state wrestling championships on Friday at the Hershey Giant Center.

The 2019-2020 Saucon Valley wrestling team qualified a school-record ten competitors into the 2019-2020 PIAA state championship tournament.  After losing three grapplers during the first day and another four on the second, Saucon Valley had three senior Panthers left in the medal-round.  Matt Arciuolo was gunning for a championship while Dane Csencsits went for third-place and Nick Warnke looked for seventh.

Day 2 for the Saucon Valley Panther wrestlers at the 2020 PIAA individual state championships is now history.  If nothing else, Friday's tourney was more bitter than sweet.  Previously, on Thursday, wrestling fans saw three of Saucon's ten grapplers bow out of the double-elimination tourney.  On Friday four more Panthers saw their season come to an end; three of them in the blood-round.  With that being said, seniors Matt Arciuolo (170), Dane Csencsits (182) and Nick Warnke (285) are the only Saucon wrestlers remaining in the championships. Arciuolo and Csencsits continue their quest in the championship bracket while Warnke is fighting back in the consy's.

Day 1 for the Saucon Valley Panther wrestlers at the 2020 PIAA individual state championships is now in the books.  Travis Riefenstahl (120), Chris Arciuolo (132), Jake Jones (138), Thomas Spirk (145), Ty Pfizenmayer, Ty Csencsits (160), Matt Arciuolo (170), Dane Csencsits (182), Braydyn Lugardo (195) and Nick Warnke (285) all qualified for the trip to Hershey last week at the Southeast Regional tournament.  This weekend, the Panthers are looking for their 14th PIAA state champion in school history.

Saturday was a monumental and historic day for the Saucon Valley wrestling program.  About fourteen hours after dropping in the 2020 PIAA state semifinals to four-time champion Reynolds, the Panthers had to regroup and face the Notre Dame Green Pond Crusaders in the blood round of the consolation bracket.  Even though Saucon fell to Reynolds, they still had a chance to fight for a spot on the podium and be recognized as one of the top four teams in Pennsylvania.

It was playing out to be an old-fashioned Friday night fight inside the Hershey Giant Center when the Saucon Valley Panthers squared off against the Reynolds Raiders.  Reynolds has won the past three PIAA team titles at Hershey and was surely looking for their fourth.  Saucon Valley was banking on taking down the champ with a break-through moment.  The Raiders were able to advance to the semis with a 47-20 whoopin' over Forest Hills.  Saucon entered the semifinals by way of beating the Burrell Buccaneers.  With two powerful programs staring each other down, neither team could ill-afford to get caught peeking ahead toward tomorrow's championship final.

In the 2019-2020 quarterfinals of the PIAA team wrestling championships, the Saucon Valley Panthers went to war against the Burrell Buccaneers.  It was a battle of the #1 seeds representing District XI and District VII.  Saucon advanced into the quarterfinals by defeating Line Mountain 53-18 while Burrell punched their ticket with a 46-21 victory over Montoursville.  On this day at Hershey's Giant Center, it was tight and it was brutal. But, in the end, the Panthers busted up the Buccanneers for a 39-29 win and advanced into tonight's semifinal.

The Saucon Valley Panthers took their first step toward the 2019-2020 PIAA state title at the Hershey's Giant Center with a 53-18 victory over the Line Mountain Eagles on Thursday.  Saucon Valley quickly took the mat and never looked back as they claimed a boat-load of bonus points along the way.  Saucon picked up five pins, a tech-fall and a forfeit to stretch the score. In addition, the Panthers fought hard for four decisions that went their way.  It was a great start for Saucon Valley.

On Saturday, March 9th, Saucon Valley senior Josh Jones won the 2019 PIAA state wrestling championship.  After finishing 5th as a sophomore and 2nd as a junior, Josh earned his way to the top of the PIAA podium with a victory over Cambridge Springs senior, Tye Varndell.  Varndell, who entered the 2019 state final against Jones undefeated with a 42-0 season record, fell 7-3.  Jones became Saucon Valley's 13th state champion. Josh gave up some of his valuable time this past week to answer a few questions for Saucon Source.  Check out our exclusive interview!

The 2018-2019 PIAA wrestling season is over.  After qualifying six wrestlers for the 2019 PIAA State Wrestling Championships, the Panthers leave Hershey with four place-winners. It is the first time ever that Saucon Valley had four medalists on the PIAA podium in the same season. Josh Jones (1st, 132), Matt Arciuolo (3rd, 160), Thomas Spirk (7th, 138) and Nick Rosengrant (8th, 145) all proudly and courageously represented Panther Nation on their 2019 journey through Hershey.
