The following information is about the Phyllis M. Schnaible Scholarship, which is provided by the Hellertown-Lower Saucon Chamber of Commerce and available to Saucon Valley residents. In addition to this information, the application form is posted on the Lower Saucon Township website.
The Hellertown-Lower Saucon Chamber of Commerce is proud to name this scholarship in memory of Phyllis M. Schnaible (1942-2003). Phyllis was a dedicated board member of this chamber and an important part of our community. For 11 years, she served as Executive Director of the Saucon Valley Community Center where she managed the ‘FORE and AFT’ programs which encouraged students from Hellertown and Lower Saucon Township to make constructive use of their time before and after school while their parents were engaged with employment.
SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA
The following criteria are to be used for students wishing to make application for the 2015 Chamber of Commerce’s Phyllis M. Schnaible Scholarship of $1,000.
Application Criteria:
- The scholarship is available to any student residing in Hellertown or Lower Saucon Township.
- An applicant must be planning to further his or her education within six months of graduating from high school. The student will receive equal scholarship payments of $500 for the first and second semesters. Failure to matriculate for either semester will negate the remaining scholarship. Extenuating circumstances regarding matriculation must be explained in writing and will be considered by the chamber board on an individual basis.
- Submit evidence of a B+ or 85 percent grade point average or better
- Attach a resume to the application outlining the following: high school area of study; extracurricular activities and offices held; community involvements; awards and honors; religious activities; non-school related leadership roles and positions; non-school volunteer activities; part-time employment; future educational plans; vocational goals; other achievements
- Complete the application form
- The applicant will submit an essay of at least 800 words covering the following required and selected essay items: Required Item: Relate how you see your future educational pursuits aiding mankind. Select two of the following: 1) How much non-school related topics/books/information should a student read on a regular basis, why, and what are they? 2) Choose a current national topic of concern and tell how you think the problem should be solved. 3) Choose a societal topic, tradition or custom and explain why you support it or why you think it should be eliminated. 4) What is society’s greatest challenge in meeting human needs? 5) How do you perceive the state of the country and what likely future will Americans face in 2025 as a result? 6) What do you think technology’s impact will be on society by 2020?
Application Procedures:
- The application package is due by April 14, 2015. See application form.
- Essays will be judged by the Scholarship Committee of the chamber. The winning applicant will be notified by the Scholarship Committee no later than May 14, 2015. After deciding upon an institution of higher learning, the scholarship winner will submit (to the same address as for the application) the name of the school, address and verification of the student’s enrollment at the school.
- The scholarship winner will be encouraged to attend a future Chamber of Commerce event for public recognition of the scholarship.
- The school district will be notified of the recipient by May 15, 2015.
