The Northampton County judge whose district includes Hellertown borough and Lower Saucon Township announced his resignation effective March 1 in a faxed notice to County Deputy Court Administrator Debra French Monday, just a couple of months after he began serving a new 6-year term, the Express-Times reported.

Tidd defeated two candidates in last May’s Republican and Democratic primaries to secure himself an uncontested place on the ballot in the November general election.

According to an article published on Lehigh Valley Live, David Tidd said opportunities have arisen that make him want to focus on his private law practice, and his decision has nothing to do with a filing for personal bankruptcy last July he called a personal financial matter.

The newspaper cited an online court docket that said Tidd owes $298,000 on a $340,000 mortgage for his law office and about $20,000 on a second mortgage worth $30,000.

Tidd, of Hellertown, has a practice located at 516 Main Street in Hellertown.

The judgeship is a part-time office that pays an annual salary of $88,290 and includes full medical benefits along with a pension that’s vested after 10 years, according to a post about Tidd’s resignation on a local politics blog.

Tidd told Lehigh Valley Ramblings blogger Bernie O’Hare he no longer wants to be a referee, preferring to be in the legal game, and said his resignation is unrelated to ethical complaints filed against him by opponent David Repyneck and Repyneck’s wife Leslie during the election campaign last year; complaints O’Hare reported have not been addressed with Tidd by the Judicial Conduct Board.
