April is National Safe Digging Month: Remember to Call 8-1-1 Before You Dig

Every six minutes, an underground utility line is damaged because someone didn’t call 8-1-1 to have a line marked prior to digging in the area.

Did you know there are more than 19 million miles of pipes and cables beneath the surface of the earth?va811 Every six minutes, one of these underground utility lines is damaged because someone didn’t call 8-1-1 to have the lines marked prior to digging in the area.

To raise awareness about the importance of preventing accidental damage, April is designated National Safe Digging Month, an initiative established by the Common Ground Alliance (CGA), which focuses on awareness of safe digging practices to help prevent property damage, injuries and unnecessary utility service outages.

Pennsylvania homeowners are required to contact Pennsylvania One Call toll-free by dialing 8-1-1 to have their utility lines marked at least three business days before beginning an excavation project.
