Following a recall by TreeHouse Foods, Giant Food Stores announced Thursday that it has removed from sale Giant brand Sweet & Salty Almond Chewy Granola Bars due to the potential for them to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The following product is included in the recall:

Giant/Martin’s Sweet & Salty Almond Chewy Granola Bars, 12 pack/7.4 oz, UPC 068826709280, with a best by date of DEC 07 16 and the lot code 2151607200

Giant said it has received no reports of illnesses to date.

“Listeria is a common organism found in nature,” the news release said. “Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease. Healthy people rarely contract listeriosis. However, listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, as well as serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with weakened immune systems, such as infants, the elderly and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy.”

Customers who’ve purchased the recalled granola bars should discard any unused portions and bring their  receipt to any Giant store for a full refund, Giant said.

Consumers looking for more information about the recall should call TreeHouse Private Brands at 1-800-756-5781, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. (CST). Customers can also call Giant Customer Service at 1-888-814-4268 for more information.
