UPDATE: The owners of the Lehigh Valley Waffle house restaurants have confirmed to the media that the recalled eggs are not used in their eateries. Ercan and Catherine Yildiran told LehighValleyLive.com Tuesday that they purchase their eggs from Heisler Egg Farm in Tamaqua, which has had no egg recalls. The USDA news release did not specify that different Waffle House restaurants within Pennsylvania obtain their eggs from different suppliers.

Eggs that were sold to Waffle House restaurants and Walmarts in Pennsylvania are part of a huge U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) recall over salmonella concerns.

Locally there is a Waffle House restaurant at 2101 Cherry Lane, Bethlehem, and several Walmart supercenters where food is sold.

To date, 22 illnesses connected to the eggs have been reported, the FDA said in a news release.

“Through an abundance of caution, Rose Acre Farms of Seymour, Ind., is voluntarily recalling 206,749,248 eggs because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella Braenderup, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems,” the release said. “Healthy individuals infected with Salmonella Braenderup can experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella Braenderup can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”

Many of the eggs have also been sold at Walmart stores in Pennsylvania and other states under the company’s “Great Value” store brand name.

The following is a list of carton UPCs for those eggs:

The FDA said the eggs were distributed from a farm in Hyde County, N.C., and reached consumers in the following states: Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia, through retail stores and restaurants via direct delivery.

“Consumers who have purchased shells eggs are urged to immediately discontinue use of the recalled eggs and to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund,” the FDA said.

Consumers with questions can contact Rose Acre Farms at 855-215-5730 between the hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (EST).

  • As an employee of Waffle House on both Cherry Lane and Airport Road, I’d like to confirm that we are NOT part of this recall by any means. We buy eggs from local farms and would appreciate if we could be excluded from this article all together. Patrons who dine with us have should have no concern. Thank you!
