A powerful winter storm invaded the Lehigh Valley Wednesday afternoon and brought with it the expectation that as much as 20 inches of snow could be deposited on the area.
The likelihood that a major winter storm will strike eastern Pennsylvania Wednesday prompted borough officials in Hellertown to declare a snow emergency, which will take effect at 7 a.m. Dec. 16 and remain in force until further notice.
With less than 48 hours until a snowstorm is expected to begin, forecasters are urging residents of eastern Pennsylvania to prepare for potentially record-breaking accumulation and possibly significant disruptions to work, school and other activities.
A massive late winter coastal storm that’s predicted to strike the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast Tuesday is now forecast by the National Weather Service to bring 18 to 24 inches of snow to the Lehigh Valley area, including Hellertown and Lower Saucon Township, in what could be a historic March weather event.
The latest forecasts for a coastal storm predicted to affect the Saucon Valley area Monday and Tuesday include the potential for a ‘substantial’ amount of snow.
Ever since the Blizzard of 2016 dropped 30-plus inches of snow on the Saucon Valley, public works employees in places like Hellertown have been working around the clock to remove snow from roads, so life can soon return to normal.
Chairs and other items cannot be used to save parking spaces on city or borough streets, snow must be cleared from sidewalks within 24 hours of a snowfall, snow must be cleared from around fire hydrants, and snow cannot be thrown onto streets as part of one’s snow removal effort.
Although the Blizzard of 2016 isn’t close to being over yet, the “overperforming” storm is already shaping up to be one for the record books, with locations in the Lehigh Valley reporting close to two feet of snow by mid-afternoon Saturday.
Saucon Valley residents are hunkered down and weathering the worst snowstorm to hit the region in 20 years.
In advance of a winter storm that is forecast to drop at least six inches of snow on the area, both Hellertown borough and Lower Saucon Township officials have declared snow emergencies that will take effect late Friday and early Saturday.
