Hellertown’s volunteer fire company has a new man in charge.
Former assistant fire chief Mike Maguire was elected chief at Dewey Fire Company No. 1 at a meeting Tuesday night, and officially appointed to the position by a vote of borough council Monday.
Mayor Richard Fluck administered an oath to Maguire in front of an audience that included family, friends and many of his colleagues from the fire company.
Maguire replaces outgoing fire chief Rick Delmore, who served at the helm of the 117-year-old company for nearly a decade.
In a post on his personal Facebook page, Maguire said he is “extremely honored and humbled to have been nominated and voted to this position.”
“I am even more honored that I have the support and trust of so many within the company to place me into this position,” he said. “I believe that I have always placed the best interest of not only the company itself, but more importantly, all of the members in it. I will continue to do just that and hopefully make Dewey an even better place than what is has become today.”
“I would also like to personally thank Chief Rick Delmore for his leadership for the past nine-and-a-half years at Dewey,” he added. “Although I was not present for all of those years, I have learned a lot from him and the rest of the members, and I will continue to learn from everyone, everyday (during) my time as Chief.”
At Monday’s meeting, Jon Lau was appointed assistant fire chief.
Delmore was also thanked for his service to the company.
“You took that fire department to places nobody could have imagined,” council president Tom Rieger told him. “Don’t be a stranger… Thank you very much from all the residents of the borough.”
