A fox that was exhibiting strange behavior and may have rabies was seen on Pleasant Drive, which is off Hickory Hill Road in Lower Saucon Township Thursday, a resident reported on social media.

AloraAnne Fenner said in a Facebook post that the fox appeared to be “rabid, manged” and “malnourished,” after it “crawled out from under a parked car and tried to climb in the vehicle with a person standing there.”

She warned other residents to keep an eye on their pets.

Fenner said she contacted the PA Game Commission about the sighting and was told they won’t send an officer out for such a report.

She said she had also contacted the Lower Saucon Township Police Department.

A May 2016 PA Dept. of Agriculture Bureau of Animal Health & Diagnostic Services map indicates that there have been 5-6 confirmed rabies cases in Northampton County and six or more confirmed rabies cases in Bucks County since the beginning of the year.

The map doesn’t specify where specifically they were located, but two of the animals that were found to be infected in Northampton County were foxes.

More information about rabies symptoms in domestic and wild animals and how to protect against the disease can be found on the Dept. of Agriculture’s website.

The number for the Lower Saucon Township Police Department is 610-317-6110, and the Northampton County non-emergency number is 610-759-2200.
