If you want to get to know the police officers who protect and serve you better, put National Night Out on your calendars.

On Tuesday, Aug. 1, the Lower Saucon Township and Hellertown police departments along with volunteer members of the Dewey, Lower Saucon and Steel City fire departments will join together to participate in National Night Out 2017.

This event is held annually across the country, as a way to help improve ties between police and fire personnel and residents.

“National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live,” according to the About page on the NNO website. “National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. Furthermore, it provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.”

“The idea is to bring communities together,” said Hellertown borough manager Cathy Hartranft.

In the Saucon Valley, emergency responders will be on the move from 6 to 9 p.m.
