Although meetings are held only infrequently, the Borough of Hellertown is still having a problem mustering applicants for two vacancies on its zoning hearing board.

The five-member board already had an established vacancy before chairman Jeffrey Hahn passed away this spring.

Now two seats are vacant, and despite advertising the vacancies borough council president Tom Rieger said Monday that no applications have been received.

The only requirements to serve on the board are borough residency and to be of voting age (18 or older). Applicants must also appear before council to be interviewed at a meeting.

The current members are Kristina Fish, Secretary, Marina Brekhounets and Thomas Dietrich. Former borough councilman Jonathan Lentz is an alternate member.

If the borough cannot find people willing to serve on the zoning hearing board, Rieger said the borough code does allow for it to be reduced in size from five members to three.

“It’s been a while since we’ve had a full zoning board,” he noted.

Meetings are scheduled for the third Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m., but are only held when there is board business, which is seldom.

“Nine-point-nine times out of 10 (the meetings are) canceled,” Rieger said.

Anyone interested in applying to fill a vacancy on the Hellertown zoning hearing board should email a letter of interest to co************@he***************.org.
