Litter Littering

Litter a Growing Problem in Midst of COVID-19 Pandemic

April is supposed to be the time of year when volunteers from throughout the state take to roadways and parks to clean up litter and help “Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful.” This year, however, the cleanups are suspended, and with many people off work and spending time outside litter piles are rapidly growing.

Borough Adopts New Garbage Fee Schedule for Some Businesses

Hellertown Borough Council voted to adopt a new sanitation fee schedule Monday that will result in fee changes for some businesses. Under the new fee schedule, commercial businesses with 2 cubic yard dumpsters will pay $700 per year for once-weekly pickup, $1,050 per year for twice-weekly pickup or $1,400 per year for thrice-weekly pickup. Commercial businesses with 1.5 cubic yard dumpsters will pay $525 per year for weekly pickup, $1,050 per year for twice-weekly pickup or $1,312 for pickup three times a week. Borough manager Cathy Hartranft said that under the new fee schedule there will be no changes to the garbage fees paid by residential, home office, low-impact and medium-impact commercial businesses. The change in the fee structure was made after council first discussed the idea late last year.

Hellertown Businesses Could See Garbage Fee Changes

Hellertown Borough Council members discussed the possibility of changing the fee schedule for garbage pickup for some borough businesses at their meeting Monday night. Although no final decision about the fees was made, council did vote to send letters this week to dozens of business and property owners whose garbage bills would increase by $150 or more next year under the proposed schedule. Rates for residential, home occupation and low-impact commercial businesses will remain the same, borough manager Cathy Hartranft stressed in a follow-up email. “We have added a rate for Medium Impact and High Impact Commercial Business to reflect the volume of trash put out at these establishments (please note these are businesses without dumpsters),” she said in the email. For those businesses with dumpsters, the proposed changes are:

1.5 cubic yard dumpster – rate increase from $474/yr.
