Hellertown Borough Council got down to business Monday at their first meeting of the new year, which was relatively brief due to a lack of any major business on the agenda.

One meeting highlight was the introduction of Carrie Smith as the Hellertown Police Department’s new part-time secretary.

“We had quite a few applicants, we interviewed several people and it’s been my recommendation, and with the help of (borough manager) Cathy (Hartranft) and (finance director) Tina (Krasnansky), that Carrie Smith be the new secretary of the police department,” said Hellertown Police Chief James Baitinger.

It was also announced by council member Liz Thompson that the Hellertown Planning Commission will not meet in January due to a lack of business.

Hartrant told council she has re-advertised a job posting for a borough zoning officer. The borough has been contracting codes enforcement and zoning work with its engineering firm since former zoning officer Kris Russo resigned to accept another job offer in the fall.

In other business, council approved payment in the amount of $97,650 to Kobalt Construction for the Dimmick Park basketball court project and swale greening the contractor has worked on.

As is customary at the first meeting in January, council also approved a resolution appointing various individuals and firms to fill borough positions for the year 2025.

Council’s next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m., due to the observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Monday, Jan. 20. Council normally meets on the first and third Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in the upstairs meeting room at Borough Hall, 685 Main St., Hellertown. Meetings are open to the public and are also livestreamed on Zoom and Facebook.

Meeting agendas and minutes are available on the borough’s website.
